Must post to ease buyer's remorse.
I just spent $500+. I'm getting a new bed. Memory foam mattress and wooden platform bed. And yes, that cost is for both. And yes, it's about half of what I would have spent at a furniture store for just the mattress, nevermind the platform bed. This, my friends, is the value of shopping online.
However, I have a complaint.
I'm getting the platform bed from WalMart. Even though they have a "deliver to nearest store" option that means free shipping, it is not available for this item. Thus I had to pay almost $60 for shipping. For a bed that costs $116. Thus I'm paying $187. And they have no other, cheaper shipping options. And what will they do if I'm not home when it arrives?
The mattress, on the other hand, was free shipping. Go to Foam Factory if you're interested.
Yes, it's a layer of memory foam on top of regular foam. In my younger days I slept for years on a traditional futon over a 6 inch thick slab of regular foam rubber, both sitting directly on the floor. It was loverly. I always had a veritable wallow of quilts, blankets, pillows and books. I slept like a rock. I'm dearly craving that again, since I am 98% certain that the current state of decrepitude of my bed is slowly ruining my back, making me sick. I also snore when lying on my back, which is the only semi-comfortable position I can sleep in on this torture rack I call a bed. Thus, the probability of sleep apnea. I'm fairly sure I've been doing that the last couple of nights, since I've had my usual amount of sleep but woke up the last two days feeling more exhausted than when I went to bed.
And no, I can't get an air mattress bed. I have a cat with half-inch-long claws and paws the size of a German Shepherd. He LOVES picking on my bed. Despite having a cardboard scratcher and a house full of carpet. So it's better to get something he can only take chunks out of, not puncture and make useless. And anyway, the memory foam mattress has a cover on it, so he can't do much damage.
Yes. You read right. PAWS THE SIZE OF A GERMAN SHEPHERD. He weighs about 18 lbs.
You should see his teeth.
And aside from all that, I'll have to pay $89 to get the old bed hauled away to the dump. Joy.
Well. The bed thing is desperately needed and I've been meaning to do this for a long time. But A. I'm lazy, and B., I didn't want to spend the money. But if there's one thing I'm trying to get through my thick head it's that there comes a time when you have to spend the money and do what needs to be done. Yes, the $1300 in the savings account is cool. But the really cool thing is when you can stop suffering and take care of yourself. It's not self-indulgence when YOU STOP BREATHING and NO ONE IS THERE TO MAKE SURE YOU WAKE UP ALIVE.
So. Spend the money, stop suffering, and mark one of the myriad things to be done off the list.
Yes I'm an idiot.
