This morning as dawn was beginning to break I saw a strangely glittering star. It flashed white and red and hung motionless in the sky in the east, neither drawing closer nor away. Not an aircraft. Not a normal star. I watched for several minutes, trying to keep warm as it was rather chilly and I didn't have my jacket. It never moved save to flash white, red, white, red, very quickly. I guessed it must be a satellite, perhaps in geostationary orbit as it didn't move relative to the Earth. I determined to look it up on Heavens Above when I got home and felt rather pleased that I had seen my first satellite, considering how long I've wanted to see one.

I just checked Heavens Above. There were no satellites listed as making passes at that approximate time. Nothing near that time, and nothing in the south-southeast. It wasn't the ISS, nor the Hubble, nor any amateur radio satellites or Iridiums.

I have no idea what it was now.

Twinkle twinkle...
